Donald Brethouwer

October 3, 1938 — November 4, 2017

Donald Eugene Brethouwer, 79, of Oostburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2017 with his children by his side.  Donald was born on October 3, 1938, in Sheboygan, to Raymond and Arline (VerGowe) Brethouwer. He attended Oostburg High School. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1956-1959 and loved sharing stories of his travels in the Army.  His favorite being his time spent in Alaska.  Donald worked at the Iron Foundry at Kohler Company for 37 years until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of the Johnsonville Rod & Gun Club and the American Legion of Sheboygan Falls and Oostburg. Donald is survived by a daughter, Kristi (John) Loehr of Plymouth; one son, Kurt (Kristina) Brethouwer of Fort Wayne, IN; three Grandchildren, Liam Loehr, Alia Loehr, Gabi Wright; two sisters, Joanne (Keith) Wallner of Oostburg, Kathi Brethouwer of Random Lake, WI; two brothers, Larry (Rene) Brethouwer of Oostburg, Bob (Vonnie) Brethouwer of Oostburg, and an exwife. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Arline Brethouwer; brother, Richard Brethouwer; sister, Linda Shoenfeld; and an infant  son.  Donald was a simple, humble, generous and kind man.  He touched the life of anyone who met him in his own special way.  He truly was one of a kind in the best possible way.  The simple things in life were what mattered the most to him.  Rides in the country, rides along the lake, reading a book, watching a DVD from his collection, eating McDonald's , watching the ships on Lake Michigan through his binoculars , steam locomotives, fishing, hunting, or just going for a walk.  He simply enjoyed life one moment at a time. His greatest love of all however was his family.  He may have been a man of few and quiet words, but his loved ones knew he loved them.  It wasn't the words he said, but what he did that showed his love.  Please remember him by showing love and kindness to others, for it is what he did best.   A funeral service to celebrate Donald's life will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 5pm at the Wenig Funeral Home of Oostburg.  A burial will take place at Hingham Cemetery on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 9:00. Relatives and friends may greet the family at Wenig Funeral Homes in Oostburg on Friday, November 10, 2017, from 2:30pm until the time of service at 5pm.Donald's family would like to thank "the girls" from The Waterford in Plymouth where he spent his final days.  Their compassion and kindness shown to him and his family was so appreciated.  Also Sharon S.
