Neal Buteyn

Neal W. Buteyn, 82, of Oostburg, passed away on Friday morning, March 17, 2017, at Cedar Grove Gardens. Neal was born on July 1, 1934, in Oostburg, son of Cornelius and Emmeline (TenPas) Buteyn. He was a 1952 graduate of Oostburg High School, and did his undergraduate work at Calvin College and Lakeland College. He received his Master's degree from Murray State University in Kentucky in 1967. Neal served in the US Army from 1954-1956, spending 18 months in Orlean, France. On September 14, 1957, he married Helen VanStelle in the Town of Wilson. Neal was a teacher and principal for various CSI schools for 35 years, including Sheboygan and Waupun Christian School until his retirement in 1996. Neal and Helen moved back to Oostburg in 2000. Neal was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg, where he participated in various Bible study groups, and the Sheboygan County Jail Ministry. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Christian Schools International for six years, Oostburg American Legion Hartman-Lammers Post 286, Midwest Christian Educators Association, and former member of the Oostburg Kiwanis Club. Neal was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1991. Helen and Neal were active members of the area support group with Neal serving as facilitator for many years. He developed an avid interest in genealogy and writing historical accounts of his family, his church, and the Oostburg area. Neal enjoyed fishing, reading, ice cream and playing dominoes. Neal is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen; his two daughters, Anne Buteyn of Oostburg and Mary (Randy) Paul of Randolph; his son, Jon (Deb) Buteyn of Plymouth; one granddaughter, Megan Buteyn and two step-grandchildren, Brock (Nikki) Laingren and Steph Winkel; one great-granddaughter, Ava Buteyn; three sisters, Marcia (Don) Modahl of Sheboygan, Jean (Larry) Kappers of Oostburg, and Nedra (Dennis) Kanz of Sheboygan; two sisters-in-law, Vonnie (Cal) Wynveen and Marge Daane, both of Oostburg; one brother-in-law, Bill (Alvina) DeBoer of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. Neal was preceded in death by his parents, Casey and Emmeline Buteyn; parents-in-law, Martin and Esther VanStelle; his sister, June DeBoer, a sister-in-law, Virginia (Jim) DePagter and a brother-in-law David Daane. A funeral service to celebrate Neal's life will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, March 20, 2017 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Drew Zylstra officiating. Burial and Military Honors will take place at Hartman Cemetery in the Town of Wilson. Relatives and friends may gather at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Sunday from 2-7pm, and on Monday, at church, from 9:30 am until the time of the service at 10:30 am. A memorial fund has been established in Neal's name for Oostburg, Sheboygan or Central Wisconsin Christian Schools, Wisconsin Parkinson's Association, and Cedar Grove Gardens. The staff of the Wenig Funeral Home of Oostburg (920-564-2771) is assisting Neal's family with arrangements.
