Betty Harmeling

Betty J. Harmeling, 92, of Oostburg, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Pine Haven Christian Residential Home with her daughter and son-in-law at her side. Betty was born December 29, 1925 to Harvey and Delia (Soerens) Huenink in Cedar Grove, WI. She graduated from Cedar Grove High School in 1943 and from the Business Institute in Milwaukee in 1944. She was a legal secretary in Milwaukee. When WW II ended she married her sweetheart, Edward Harmeling at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Grove on November 3, 1945. He preceded her in death on September 1, 2004. Betty was the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Grove where she directed three choirs and the Handbell Choir. She was also a member of Women's Fellowship. She was a member of PEO Sisterhood for over 50 years. In 1949 Betty and Ed built Dutch Cleaners in Cedar Grove and operated their business until 1954. After having an auction of their home and furnishings, they left for California. Betty worked as a medical secretary in Redlands, Inglewood and San Pedro, CA. They moved back to Cedar Grove in 1982 and then to Oostburg in 1993. Betty and Edward enjoyed traveling all over the world, especially on cruise ships. She liked to play golf, bowl, garden, and play piano duets with friends. Her family was most important of all in her life. Betty is survived by her daughter, Rita (Alan) Harmeling of Oostburg; five grandchildren, Jessica (fiancee Jeffrey Galloway) Finstad, Carson City, NV, Heather (Christopher) Sawdon of Mason, MI, Kristina (Dan Chua) Finstad of Fiji and New Zealand, and Brett Harmeling of Houston, TX and Andrew Harmeling, of Milwaukee; two great grandchildren, Sierra and Joseph Sawdon; one brother, Neale (JoAnn) Huenink of Soddy Daisy, TN; and one brother-in-law, Dr. Mark (Miriam) Harmeling of California. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, her daughter, Sherryl Ann, her parents, and her sister-in-law, Mary Sue (Roland) Veenendaal. Funeral services to celebrate Betty's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at First Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Cedar Grove with Rev. David VanDixhorn officiating. Burial will be at Presbyterian Cemetery in the Town of Holland.Relatives and friends may gather at the church on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 9-11 am.A memorial fund has been established in Betty's name for First Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Pine Haven Christian Communities.
