Donald “Don” L. Schmitt was called home by His Lord & Savior on June 8th, 2024 at Sharon S. Richardson Hospice. Don was the son of the late Peter Sr. & Ruth (Grotegut) Schmitt and was born in Byron, Michigan on July 8, 1936. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1954.
Don served his country in the U S Army from 1955 till his honorable discharge in 1958. He served 2 years in Japan with the ASA (Army Security Agency). He played with the Redwings in Sheboygan. He was also a member of the Tempe, Arizona Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. # 2251. Where he was awarded Elk of the year for 1974-1975. Don was a member of the Riverview Club in Sheboygan.
He worked for Bemis manufacturing for 24 years. In those years he had been president of the BWA (Bemis Workers Association) for many years and also had served on the board of directors for the Bemis credit union. After his retirement he volunteered for many years at St. Nicholas hospital. Don belonged to the Tuesday night golf league at Town & Country golf course for many years.
In 1960, he was married to Marlene Markus. They had two sons, Douglas (Aimee) of Rockford, IL & Danny (Heidi) of Scottsdale, AZ.
In 1978, Don married Irene (Kruis) Bishop. They spent their winters in Lady Lake, Florida.
Don is survived by his wife, Irene, his children, 3 step children, Deborah (Tom) Ashworth, Lady Lake, FL, Kathleen (Steven) Cupp, Sheboygan, WI, and Steven (Mary) Bishop, Sheboygan, WI. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Don was also survived by sisters-in-law, Barbara Schmitt, Elizabeth Erickson, La Verne (Woody) Soerens, & Ruth Kruis.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Richard, Clayton, & Peter Schmitt and one sister, Suzanne Schroeder, 6 brothers-in-law & 3 sisters-in-law.
There will be a memorial service for Don at the First Reformed Church, Sheboygan Falls, WI on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 11:00AM, with Pastor Brad Veenendaal officiating. All are welcome to view a livestream of the service on Don’s obituary page at www.wenigfh.com . Family & friends may call at the church from 9:30AM until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sharon S. Richardson Hospice in Don’s name.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Sharon S. Richardson Hospice for the amazing care they provided during Don’s illness.
