Evelyn Mayer

Evelyn Katherine Mayer, 96 of Sheboygan Falls, WI passed away on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Harvest Home in Howard Grove.

Evelyn was born at home March 24,1925. She was raised on the family farm in the town of Newton (Manitowoc County). She was the youngest of 6 children born to Frank & Katherine (Fruzyna) Bonin.

She attended Whittier School, the local one room country schoolhouse, Washington Jr. High & graduated from Manitowoc's Lincoln High School in 1943. Those were the War Years & she remembered classes being released so students could walk to the 8th St. Bridge & see the launching of mine sweepers built at the nearby Manitowoc Shipyards. She also recalled that even before graduation, young men from her class who were eligible, were signing up and going off to war. Evelyn had an excellent memory and gift for recalling interesting details from the past & growing up in the Great Depression.

After High School, Evelyn continued to help her mother on the farm and worked as a teller at the Newton State Bank.

On November 9, 1946 she married Hilary Michael Mayer at St. Casimir Church Northeim, Newton, WI. They lived in the community of Haven, WI, town of Mosel for 2 years on the Mayer family farm before moving to Sheboygan Falls in 1948. Evelyn was a Member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sheboygan Falls since that time.

Once her children were all in school, she worked as a waitress at Winter's Restaurant and then Richard's Dinner Club. She was at Richard's for 26 years, retiring in 1996.

Over the years Evelyn enjoyed many interests. She was an excellent, creative cook & baker. She gardened, canned, sewed, read, and loved to get people out on the dance floor at family weddings. She was also a Red Cross volunteer for many years, but her greatest enjoyment was in lovingly nurturing her family which she excelled at.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Katherine Bonin, her husband, Hilary M. Mayer, her young grandson, Michael A. Markelz, two brothers, Edwin (Janet) Bonin, Ralph (Mildred) Bonin, three sisters, Helen (Eddie) Kortas, Alice (Leo) Kornely, & Florence (Elroy) Rodewald.

She is survived by her 3 children, Katherine (Richard) Loveless of Stevens Point, WI, Michael R. Mayer of Sheboygan, Constance (Dave) Rupple of Sheboygan Falls, 3 step grandchildren, Hiedi Fields of El Paso, TX, Heather Wilson of Carol Stream, IL & Shane Rupple, Brooksville, FL. Also included are her step grand and great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, good neighbors, and friends.

Evelyn lived her last 3 years in Howards Grove at Harvest Home Assisted Living. There, she received very excellent care & attention from the wonderful staff who Evie referred to as her angels.

A private family funeral service and burial took place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Sheboygan Falls.

The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care they provided mom during her final weeks of life.
