Gene “Spike” Geltemeyer passed away Thursday morning, November 21, 2024, at Pine Haven. Spike was born September 16, 1936, in Sheboygan, the son of Henry and Ottilie (Krause) Geltemeyer. He spent his first four years on the Krause farm on the corner of Broadway and Hwy 28, before moving to the city of Sheboygan Falls. He graduated in 1956 from Sheboygan Falls High School where he played basketball and was a 4-year letter winner in football. He later played football with the Sheboygan Redwings.
On August 8, 1959, he was united in marriage with Lois Mountain at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Sheboygan. They celebrated 61 years together before her passing in 2020.
He proudly served his country in the US Army from 1961-1962 during the Berlin Crisis. He was a member of the American Legion Post #149, and volunteered at Camp American Legion 2 weeks a year.
For 43 years, Spike worked at Kohler Company, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club and UAW 833, where he enjoyed calling bingo.
Spike belonged to Blessed Trinity Catholic Parish and the Sheboygan Falls Old Timers Club. He was a Charter Member of the Sheboygan Falls Jaycees and was awarded the Jaycee of the year. He was a finance director of Camp Fire Girls, little league coach for football, and referee for basketball. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in his shop, and going up north to the family cabin. Spike had a love of golf, golfing until he was 80, and was proud to have hit a hole in one at Quit Qui Oc.
Spike is survived by three sons: David (Jacqueline) Geltemeyer, James (Donna Klein) Geltemeyer and John (Carol) Geltemeyer; grandchildren Heather Geltemeyer, Leesa (Austin) Dobschuetz, Jeff Geltemeyer, Hattie Geltemeyer, George Geltemeyer; great-grandchildren Anabelle Holmes, Mileena Dobschuetz, Emery Dobschuetz, Wyatt Kwiatkowski; brother-in-law Leo Morgan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; parents; and sister, Joyce Morgan.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00pm on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Wenig Funeral Home in Sheboygan Falls. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 10:00am until 11:30am. He will be laid to rest at Sheboygan Falls Cemetery
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
