Janet was born on September 13, 1926, to Gust and Elvira (Peterson) Nelson in Chicago. She was a graduate of Parker High School, furthering her education at North Park University and later at Chicago State University.
She was united in marriage to Evald S. Johnson on October 22, 1947, at the Englewood Covenant Church in Chicago. They shared 61 years of marriage until Evald's passing on September 13, 2008.

She was a faithful member of Beverly Covenant Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir, serving in High League, and other women’s groups. She enjoyed seasonally attending First Covenant Church of Iron Mountain, MI as well.
Regular trips up to their family cottage in Spread Eagle, Wisconsin are among her fondest life memories. There she spent countless hours baking, fixing up their home, and enjoying lake time alongside her husband, children, and grandchildren. Above all, Janet's faith and family heritage were of utmost importance to her. You could often find her at the kitchen table chatting about things of God over a hot cup of coffee and homemade Swedish coffee cake with her beloved children, grandchildren, and relatives.
