Paula M. Phipps

Paula Margaret Phipps, 75, of Oostburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday December 29, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family.

Paula was born on March 27, 1947, to James and Mary Margaret (Stinson) Whorton in Urbana, Illinois. She graduated from Cotter High School in 1965, and went on to graduate from the School of Practical Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota.

Paula was united in marriage to Garry Phipps on April 4, 1970 in Rochester, Minnesota.

Paula enjoyed caring for others in her nearly 50 year career as a nurse.  For many years, she worked as psych nurse at St Mary's Hospital, Columbia Hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital. From 1989-2014, Paula worked at Holton Street Clinic, where she retired from in 2014 as clinic director. She was passionate about the clinic’s mission, and became a well-respected, trusted advocate and friend to many through her work in the fields of STI and AIDS testing, treatment and follow-up.

Paula enjoyed reading, tatting, embroidery, calligraphy and editing for a near death experience website.  Her family, friends and the countless people she encountered in her work will miss her love, presence, support and friendly ear.

Paula is survived by her husband of 52 years, Garry, daughter Paige (Chris) Kueker of Sheboygan, grandchildren: Elizabeth Saunders, Christopher (Brianna) Saunders, Nicholas Kueker, Ashley Kueker and Cory Howard; sisters JoAn Burk of Mahtomedi, MN and Ellen (David) Foster of Winona, MN; brother Timothy Whorton of Berlin, WI; foster sister Alex Endrizzi of Rochester, MN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary (Allan) Hazelton, brother Christopher Whorton and brother-in-law Carl Burk, cousin and dear friend Sherry Stinson.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00PM noon on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Wenig Funeral Home, 108 Center Ave. in Oostburg. All are welcome to view a livestream of the service on Paula's obituary page at wenigfh.com . The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00AM-12:00PM noon.
