Sophie Schmidt

Sophie Schmidt, 96, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at her daughter's home, where she resided in her daughter's care. Sophie was born on February 24, 1921, in Medford, WI to Henry and Anna (Szubic) Horn. At the age of six, her family moved to Sheboygan. She graduated from Ebenezer Lutheran School in 1935 and Central High School in 1939. Her hobby was singing, which she did extensively through the Ebenezer Lutheran Church choir.Sophie wed George E. Marthenze in Dubuque, IA on February 21, 1942. George preceded her on September 28, 1971. On December 31, 1979, Sophie married Harold H. Schmidt at Christ Lutheran Church in Sheboygan. She was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church and was later a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Plymouth. She enjoyed reading, bowling, playing cards, golfing, and spending precious time with her family. Sophie is survived by her two daughters, Carol (Martin) Nemitz of Sheboygan Falls, Nancy Ruth Lee Marthenze of Lithia, FL; two sons, George (Sandra) Marthenze of Howard Grove, Elwood (Lorrie) Marthenze of Milton, FL; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchild; three sisters, Ruth (James) Behrens, Beth (Otis) Marquardt, and Hilda Entringer. Sophie is further survived by the Schmidt children, Barbara Schmidt, Carol Tomassi, and Robert Schmidt, and other relatives and friends. Sophie was preceded in death by her parents Henry Sr. & Anna Horn; two husbands, George E. Marthenze, Harold H. Schmidt; six sisters, Emma Hilgenberg, Anna Blushkofski, Marie Friedel, Evelyn Richter, Amalie Champeau, and an infant sister, Emilia Horn; three brothers, George Horn, Christian Horn, Henry Horn, Jr.; and a grandchild, Kyle Lee. A funeral service to celebrate Sophie's life will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Christ Lutheran Church in Sheboygan at 11am. A burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may greet the family at the church on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 9:30 am until the time of service at 11 am.
