Vernita Ella Gessert, 86, of Sheboygan died on Friday evening, December 11, 2020 while at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice Center.Vernita was born on April 15, 1934 in the Town of Sheboygan Falls, the daughter of Arthur and Frieda (Rautmann) Kaufmann. Vernita was a 1952 graduate of Sheboygan Falls High School and the UW- Sheboygan. On June 30, 1956 she married Elmer Gessert at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls. Elmer preceded her in death on December 5, 2012 following 56 years of marriage.Vernita worked at the Kohler Co. for over 20 years before her retirement in 1994.Vernita was a lifelong member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in the Town of Sheboygan Falls where she was active in Bible Study groups and the Quilters. Vernita made over 1000 quilts for her church. She also enjoyed traveling, winters in Florida, rug-making, gardening, and reading.Vernita is survived by one son, Timothy (Janet Rasmussen) Gessert of Conifer, CO; a son-in-law, Jan Prinsen of Newburg, IN; five grandchildren, Rachael Gessert, Kathryn Gessert, Benjamin Gessert, Andy (Kaitlin) Prinsen, Phillip (Kendall) Prinsen; and two great grandchildren, Adalai and Bennett Prinsen. She is also survived by two nieces, Joanne (Tom) Howe, Susan (John) Paulos; and a nephew, Thomas Kaufmann.She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; a daughter, Julie Prinsen; a son, Dean Gessert; a sister, Evelyn (Harold) Depping; two brothers, Milfred and Erwin (Esther) Kaufmann; and a nephew, David Depping. A celebration of her life is planned for a later date.
