Veronica R. Gilles (nee Hytry) passed away Tuesday morning, January 18, 2022, at her home in Sheboygan Falls. She was 88 years old.
Veronica was born June 30, 1933, in the Township of Green Valley, Wisconsin, the daughter of George and Caroline (nee Daul) Hytry. In 1952 she met the love of her life Roland Gilles, and they were married August 30, 1955. In 1969 they left Roland’s family farm and moved to Sheboygan Falls.
After high school, she attended Viterbo University in LaCrosse where she studied education. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Lakeland University and a Reading Certificate from Cardinal Stritch University. Education was Veronica’s vocation. She taught in a variety of capacities over the years and finished her career as a first-grade teacher at Waldo Elementary School. Her dedication to serving others continued throughout her retirement. Her free time found her tutoring at St. Mary School and volunteering at Pine Haven Christian Home for many years where she provided communion, company, and a listening ear for the residents.
Veronica was a supportive and involved member of Blessed Trinity Parish in Sheboygan Falls and was a humble recipient of the Woman of the Year award from the Sheboygan Jaycees. She and Roland danced together for many years as active members of the Kettle Square Dance Club. A lifelong educator and learner, Veronica possessed an intellectual curiosity that took many forms and covered many topics. Ever the hostess, she openly welcomed new people into her home and heart with her hospitality, love, and prayer.
Veronica enjoyed reading, gardening, playing cards, wintering in Florida, and traveling (including internationally). Above all, she loved her family and cherished time spent with them.
Veronica is survived by her son Stephen (Lisa) Gilles and three daughters: Anne Marie Thomas, Charlene (Dr. Robert) Lyon and Sara (Kari Kraus) Gilles. She is further survived by grandchildren: Melissa, Seth and Molly Gilles, Emily, Paul, Mitchell and Suzanna Thomas, Elise (Nathan) Kyes, Donovan, Christopher, Gregory and Rachel Lyon; siblings: Elaine Hoffman, Lenore Martin, Wanda Ripp, Sister Juanita Hytry, Donna Mayer, Sister Mary Eve Hytry, Caroline Gansel and Noreen (Roger) Kieffer; sisters-in-law: Elaine Hytry and Delores Powers; brother-in-law Dave (Helen) Gilles; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
