Obituary

Fred G. Gafner, of Greenfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at Cedar Bay West in West Bend. He was 89 years old. 

Fred was born April 16, 1933 in West Allis, the only child of Fred and Olga (Griel) Gafner. He attended school in West Allis, graduating in 1951. He went to proudly serve his country in the United States Army.

For over 40 years, Fred worked at Kearney and Trecker in West Allis as a machine tool service representative.

On February 23, 1963, Fred was united in marriage with the love of his life, Doris Deal, in Indianapolis. They shared 59 years together, and raised 3 children.

An avid racing fan, Fred enjoyed attending sprint car races and the Indy 500 with Doris and their family. He also loved watching Brewer and Packer games, going out on Friday nights with friends, watching his granddaughter play softball, and enjoying a cold beer.

Fred is survived by his wife Doris and their children: Eric (Mari) Gafner of San Francisco and Heather (Scott) Hoogester of Batavia. He is further survived by his grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Nathan (Anna) Pompe, Kenzie Hoogester (Cole), Tyler Hoogester (Blaire); sisters-in-law Victoria (Rodney) Farmer and Shirley Deal; brother-in-law Tom (Cathy) Deal; granddaughters Darby and Sydney Shanaberger; other relatives and friends.

Fred is preceded in death by his daughter Holly Shanaberger.

Funeral Services to celebrate Fred’s life will be held at 1:00PM on Friday, September 23, 2022 at Wenig Funeral Home, 108 Center Ave in Oostburg. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00AM-1:00PM. In memory of Fred, please wear your favorite flannel.

He will be laid to rest at Washington County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in Fred’s name to be put towards Alzheimers and bladder cancer research.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Cedar Bay West, Cedar Hospice and Dr. Ruggeri’s office for their compassionate and loving care of Fred.
